Lewis Hamilton was back to his karting roots today meeting the current Stars of Tomorrow cadet drivers, and watching them take part in the McLaren-Mercedes Vodafone Karting Challenge!
Lewis gave some advice to the young drivers on starting races, and how to maximise their performance. - “I was always gaining places at the races, especially at the beginning, no matter what position you start in. You have to attack, and try to take as many places as you can. But it's not all about winning it at the first corner. It's about taking your time, and pacing yourself throughout the race, knowing you have 10 or 15 laps, knowing that you have got to take 2 people on that lap, 2 people again on a another lap, or maybe 3 or whatever on the last lap.” Going into a race and having a strategy is the key to winning.

Honda Cadets on the grid 24 Finished 16 Something seems to have gone wrong..... not making progress is one thing and at times is to be expeceted, but this weekend was very difficult (for us parents probably more than Riley), with Riley's reluctance to get mixed up in the pack.
The speed was there on Saturday practice, and when he drove in his own space on Sunday's race, but his confidence and desire seem to have gone completly. He didnt even mind being overtaken and beaten by novices, let alone others drivers that he has been beating all season. We had a lot of input from the Team this weekend, track walks, confidence boosting chats, not so polite chats(!) but all to no avail. He was slower this weekend in the races than he was back in May. Very frustrating... Although I guess as Riley still enjoyed himself it shouldnt matter too much. Positives from the weekend - Riley had fun, when he was fast he was very fast, the new engine is definitely better then the old one and getting better each race, great team win for Charlie in MiniMax. Anyway, time for a chat about belief and motivation and see what we need to work on and where we go from here. |
